Established in 1839, Elora, Ontario was named by Scott, Capt. Gilkinson after the Ellora Caves in India. It was the towering 80-foot limestone Gorge that runs through the heart of the village descending into the Irvine and Grand Rivers that inspired the name. The village core is still rich with history, it’s 18th-century architecture sets a picturesque scene for tourists and residents alike. Elora is home to the most expensive homes in Centre Wellington. The region is popular for families and those looking for a more relaxed way of life. Commuters have perhaps driven prices up in the last decade. The median home price in Elora is $740,000 while neighbouring Fergus is at a more comfortable $435,000 range. Real estate includes a wide variety of homes, many showcasing the local limestone found in many of the beautiful buildings in the downtown core.
Elora’s economy is heavily based in agriculture but in the last 10-20 years has benefited greatly from tourism. The region is not without industry, manufacturing, a growing retail landscape, healthcare services and trades. The regional census puts 6.4% of the workforce in agriculture and resource-based industry, 24.8% in manufacturing and construction, 19.8% in health and education and 13.2% in wholesale and retail trade. Fun fact: Centre Wellington, especially Elora encourages the filming of movies and TV shows and it is not rare to find a large production taking place in the streets of its beautiful downtown core. Our favourite of Elora’s Cameos has got to be “Sleepless in Seatle,” starring Meg Ryan & Tom Hanks.
Elora has a low crime rate and is considered a very safe community. Kids can play in the parks, down by the river, bike through the streets taking only the necessary safety precautions and expect to be home safe and sound.
Elora is known for its environmentally conscious policy and forward-thinking population. The community members are generally quite active in pushing for improving processes and practices in order to make Elora more eco-friendly.
Elora is definitely a kid and pet-friendly place to visit and call home. With plenty of beautiful green spaces and outdoor adventure opportunity nature and adventure, enthusiasts flock to the area for everything from cliff jumping, rock climbing, tubing, kayaking, hiking, camping and more. A rich cultural scene has developed over the years offering residents and visitors alike access to great concert series, art tours and plenty to keep the senses pleased.
