John Harris, the first settler of Eramosa Township built a small shanty in 1821 followed by Col. Henry Strange in 1840. In the 1850’s the community, originally known as Brotherstown, became known as Rockwood. In 1825, Samuel Rife was the first settler of Guelph Township. In 1827, a group of Scottish settlers called the La Guayrans, who originally settled in Venezuela, were resettled in Guelph Township by the Canada Company. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Guelph Township became a centre for agricultural excellence through rural and agricultural educational institutions. Today Rockwood, the central hamlet of the Township of Guelph-Eramosa is a thriving community that boasts a great quality of life. Proximity to Guelph and the GTA combined with the area’s natural beauty and boutique local amenities make Rockwood a charming place to live for families, nature enthusiasts and retirees alike.

With the intention of improving the lifestyle for those living in the region over 55 years of age, the Township of Guelph-Eramosa recently applied and was gifted a grant from the Ontario Sport and Recreation Communities Fund to implement a number of programs that encourage seniors in the community to live healthy and active lifestyles. The goal is to increase opportunities for sport and recreation participation, implement physical literacy in sport and recreation activity as a foundation for lifelong participation and, strengthen the community sport and recreation sector by building capacity. Just one example of how this vibrant community works toward supporting a healthy and active lifestyle for all of its residents.
